Blogging from the frontline of heating & air conditioning on Nantucket

Wiring 101

by Colleen

Today, Harold arrived at a home upon the request of an island caretaker.  The homeowner had asked his caretaker to bring someone in to determine why their heat (which was installed by another contractor) ran continuously…all day, every day, year-round.  Although they were pleased with the fact that it kept their basement nice and dry in the summer, this was obviously not an effective or efficient manner in which to keep their home comfortable.

Harold has been in the business for over 30 years.  Before he went to school for refrigeration and heating, he was an apprentice for a local electrician.  He knows his low-voltage wiring.  More importantly, he knows his limitations.  If he’s not sure about something, he looks at the wiring diagram and/or talks to the manufacturer.  Unlike many of his competitors, he doesn’t just “fiddle around” with wires until he gets the equipment to run.  He does the research and wires the equipment to run properly.

Harold opened up the control panel of their heating unit, looked at the low-voltage wiring, saw the problem, and fixed it.  If an installation contractor does not know the controls that they have sold to you and their corresponding wiring, they can cost you A LOT of money when it comes to operation.  Can you imagine how much unnecessary propane and electricity the above homeowner has paid for?

My first blog…ever.

What does one blog about in the world of heating and air conditioning?   Like any other couple, my husband and I unwind at the end of the day by sharing our experiences of the day with one another.  We recognize the fact that our customers and potential customers have many options available to them when choosing their HVAC contractor.  I thought it might be a good idea to share some of these stories to allow you an insider’s view.  When compared to other contractors, our services are not always an “Apples to Apples” comparison.
